Toy? Miniature? Tween? Standard? Giant?
I’m sure you’ve heard most of these terms at some time in regards to a dachshund’s size. There are actually only TWO proper terms for dachshund categories.
Toy - There is no classification for a toy-sized dachsie. If you have a teenie weenie, you basically have a teenie mini.
Miniature - 11lbs and under
Tween - Most people call the teen poundage sizes a “tween” This is not a classification.
Standard - 16-32 lbs
Hmmm….now what about those weights that are in the 12-15 lb range? If youre like this household, you probably have a mini who could stand to lose a few pounds.
So, the only two classes are Miniature (>11) or Standard (16-32). We have two standards, Jeau (19 lbs) and Linus (20 lbs), three mini’s, Little Thing (9lbs), Teena (12 lbs - chubby), and Telly (12 lbs - chubby)….and that old lady Gracie is creeping up into those iffy weights. I think her ideal weight would be about 15 lbs.
I would love to meet a 32 lb standard! I bet they look like a basset hound!
BTW, if a breeder is advertising “tweens”….run for the hills. (and adopt from the Nebraska Dachshund Rescue!) No reputable breeder would promote creating dachshunds that are giant minis or mini standards. A reputable breeder would be aiming for less than 11 pounds or over 20 lbs.
I’ll get down now…..
