Chloe…

This little girl was a Nebraska Dachshund Rescue dog. There was a family that lost their six dogs in a house fire. It was all over the news last January 2009. They had shown an interest in this little girl. We called the news station and had them do a follow-up story. We donated / surprised them with Chloe. They were so happy they cried. Tears of joy and sadnss.

She is a double dapple. I wont go into the genetics of it, but those two genes together are deadly and deforming. Deafness and blindness are the main problems that arise. Our Little Thing is a double dapple. She’s deaf and blind.

Look at those eyes! At first, they looked kind of creepy. Then, I saw ladybugs in her eyes. I wonder what in the world she sees??

  1. She’s beautiful, they both are. :) Are her eyes really that red? At first I thought it was “red-eye” from the flash.

  2. The camera can spot some interesting eye anomalies. Like my Linus…his right eye is blind, but you really dont notice it until I take a picture of him. His left eye is glowing green. His right eye. Nada.

My camera really did a ‘red-eye’ number on Chloe. No, her eyes absolutely arent red. Baby blue and black. Misshapen pupils are seen a lot on double dapples. I was amazed at how the camera defined the pupil areas. I wonder if she see things four times? I guess that’s better than being blind! She thinks everyone sees things four times!

  3. Timmy is also a double dapple with similar eyes. He had sudden blindness for a while and we took him to a dog opthamologist. In the end, she told us that the white/blue part is essentially the blind part. The rest they can either - see normally or only see shadows - depends on the dog. Timmy is completely blind in one eye and going blind in the other. He can still see half way out of his one eye and can see some shadows with the lower half of his pupil - it’s actually really weird and interesting! Beautiful dogs, but absolutely not worth it with all the genetic issues - so so sad! :(
